Hair removal lasers work by emitting pulses of laser energy to the hair folicles. This energy is absorbed by the dark pigment in the follicles, and they become disabled. Up to now, treating darker skin types has been a problem because darker skin absorbs enough of the laser energy to cause adverse side effects.
To overcome this obstacle, the Palomar SLP1000 Diode Laser Hair Removal System uses Super Long-Pulse Technology. This Technology delivers each pulse of laser energy to the skin over a longer period of time than other hair removal lasers. This longer delivery time (pulsewidth) minimizes the amount of heat that builds up in the skin but still allows enough heat to reach and disable the hair follicles. Super Long-Pulse Technology is so effective, it permits the treatment of ALL skin colors(types 1-6), even TANNED skin.

DO THE LASER TREATMENTS HURT?

While you may feel slight tingling sensation, most people tolerate the procedure very well. Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, you may choose to have a topical anesthetic applied to increase comfort during the procedure.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Multiple treatments are generally required. The actual number depends on the color of your hair and skin, as well as factors such as hormone levels and hair follicle size. Your physician will develop a treatment program that best fulfills your individual needs.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT?

After effects vary from patient to patient. Typically, within several minutes, the treated area may become slightly red and puffy. This reaction subsides quickly, usually within a day. Since the Palomar SLP1000 System does not cut the skin in any way, you can return to normal activity immediately.

HOW HAS UNWANTED HAIR USUALLY BEEN REMOVED?

Shaving
Shaving is a simple procedure ... but it's also messy and time consuming. (And who needs nicks and cuts?) Shaving is a temporary solution, one that requires a constant commitment.

Tweezing
Ouch! This quick-fix is not only painful... it's highly impractical for large areas! And, if you've ever tweezed, you know that the hair you pluck will only grow back again.

Depilatories
Another temporary solution. This messy procedure requires a significant time commitment and must be repeated about once a week. Caution: If depilatories are left on too long, they can cause severe skin irritation or even chemical burns.

Waxing
Waxing can cover large skin areas and may last for a month or more. Yet this procedure is painful, and can cause allergic reactions as well as prolonged inflammation of the hair follicle.

Electrolysis
This procedure involves sticking a needle into each hair follicle and applying an electric currrent. In expert hands, electrolysis can succesfully eliminate hair. But because you can treat only one hair follicle at a time, it's tedious and time-consuming.
